Kale has quite recently become a very popular vegetable and is a member of the cabbage family. Being a cruciferous vegetable, it is closely related to cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, collard greens, and Brussels sprouts.
There are several types of kale. The most common type is called curly kale, and has green and curly leaves with a hard, fibrous stem. This kale has a nutty, earthy flavour that works well in a wide range of recipes including soups, stews, salads, and smoothies.
Kale is a superfood rich in antioxidants, and micronutrients such as vitamin C, vitamin K and beta-carotene. It is known to support eye health, skin health and heart health.
A really popular snack is kale chips where you drizzle some extra virgin olive oil or avocado oil on your kale, sprinkle it with salt, and then bake in an oven until dry. These taste absolutely delicious and make a great crunchy, super healthy snack.
A lot of people also add frozen kale to their breakfast smoothies in order to boost the nutritional value and enhance the flavour with some lovely nuttiness.
